What is an Expert Witness?
An expert witness in structural engineering is someone who can provide testimony about the strength and stability of a building or other structure. This expert will have experience designing, constructing, and inspecting buildings, and will be able to assess the safety of a structure based on its design and construction. In some cases, one of our engineers may be asked to provide an opinion about whether a particular building code was followed during construction. In other cases, our engineers may be asked to investigate the cause of a collapse or other failure. An engineer who serves as an expert witness must be able to clearly explain their opinion to a judge or jury, and must be able to withstand questioning from the opposing side.

You may need an engineer to act as an expert witness if your case involves allegations of substandard engineering work or a breach of the standard of care. The engineer may be asked to provide an opinion on the cause of the problem, whether it was due to negligence or a design flaw, and whether it could have been averted with better engineering. In some cases, the engineer may also be asked to testify about the cost of repairs. An engineer can also be helpful in cases involving defective products or patent infringement. In these cases, the engineer can provide testimony about how the product was designed and how it differs from the competing products. In addition, the engineer can offer opinions about whether the product is safe and whether it meets the necessary safety standards.
